I reckon that the most effective forms of power production are for individual needs rather than mass-scale developments. There are a growing number of households and businesses who have set themselves up to be largely independent of the grid.
One example is our local water authority, Westernport Water which designed its new offices to include photovoltaic panels, a small wind generator and solar hot water. The object was to be as close to neutral as possible with its power needs. When it generates surplus power, it feeds back into the grid.
It makes more sense than constructing huge wind farms and massive solar arrays.
