Size of a wind turbine needed?
Has anyone come by any information saying how much a typical house consumes in energy and what size of a wind turbine you would need to power a whole house?

Re: Size of a wind turbine needed?
Don't have much info on small individual house classed mills...they are available here in Canada, and I think from what I have seen their about 3 to 8 feet in diameter (depending on power output requirements) I could be wrong, ....go wind power....Natural.....constant renewable .....no pollution......FREE !!!!!
Here is some info from a bigger wind project here in my area:

Re: Size of a wind turbine needed?
Thanks Chiron, I'll read through that... I remember seeing in canadian tire brochure a full section dedicated to wind and solar energy it was a two page spread... it's great for a big chain like that to promote alternative energy...I have to find some figures on this... I bet it's possible to even make some money when you have both solar panels and wind turbine going I'm sure you can see the excess energy back to hydro...

Re: Size of a wind turbine needed?
Raptor from what I know about my parents' wind turbine the company that installed it did an evaluation based on the average of their electricity bills in the past few years. Thats how they found out what their energy needs would be. Then they did another wind evaluation based on the location of the home and how much wind it receives and at what height. Using that information they have some way of calculating the size and placement. Im not sure theres a simple formula to figure it out I think there might be way to many variables since location is such a huge factor in windiness and in amounts of electricity used.

Re: Size of a wind turbine needed?
hmm interesting and it makes sense the way you describe it... is there any laws that say how big of a wind turbine you could put up in your backyard?

I'll check on that, I dont think there are any saying how big it could be, but I think if it obstructs the view of neighbors or makes too much noise (and the larger ones tend to make a little bit of noise) they can legally prevent you from building it.

If you are serious about wind energy I would recommend this book:
Wind Energy Handbook.
It should answer just about any question you have regarding wind power.

Re: Size of a wind turbine needed?
Even the prices look reasonable, however, I don't think I'd appreciate looking at such a large turbine in my backyard unless I was on a farm.
