Connections and Networking
I've just finished interviewing some great people in the Toronto area and I think some of them would be at home on this website and that users of this website might be interested in the work they are doing. If there was a section of this forum to put up links to local organizations it might be really useful. I'm not sure exactly how to make sure the place doesn't get flooded though. It almost needs to be database style or something, so you could look by region or by type of group.
Here are two groups that stick out from my serries of interviews that I would have thrown in such a thread/area.
The Toronto company Evergreen has been working to re-design urban spaces so that nature is brought back into cities. They are doing work that is practical, applicable and looks great; everything from greening urban school yards to the major project called the Brickworks. Brickworks is a reclaimed factory (that used to make bricks) which Evergreen is overhauling. I forget exactly everything it does but I know there's a local food market that is there regularily.
The other group is the Centre for Social Innovation. It's an amazing example of an incubator space that is working. They provide services for small groups who are trying to make the world better. What I also find excelent about CSI is that they get no government funding, the rent of the businesses being incubated covers all of the costs and has done so for a number of years. Another really neat thing about the group is that the firms which are a part of it are SOOO different. Some are artistic, some are into economic development, some are software, some are engineering, some are environmental. It's a great example of diversity.
Anyway, off I go into the world againg
