Default Spiders?

I figured i'd put this in the "bugs" section.

In the Whats Going On? area of the site theres a section that says

Total guests that have visited the forum in the last 24 hours: 826

Among these it says: Yahoo Spiders, Google Spiders, etc.

What exactly are these "spiders"?

Howstuffworks "How Internet Search Engines Work"

Basically, they're software that visit websites to add to the search engine's information, or something like that.

yep hit it right on the nail... in order for google to exist they need a way to read all the websites in the world... and that's done by spiders who crawl through every website and read all the information

I asked about this a short time ago when I was seeing this while checking the online status. It's quite funny to see when these spiders get an error message when they try to reply to a topic or PM a member. They just can't do it.
