Getting the Conversation Started (response to Social Capital)
Fundamentally, getting any NEW initiative started, especially for Americans, involves a grassroots campaign. This kind of thing can be very successful, but you do have to start young. If you get kids interested, they are much more likely to pass it on to their friends and get them involved. Moreover, they are much more open to change. A good example that I saw living in China was Jane Goodall's group for schools (Roots & Shoots). The kids involved went o other schools, posted items on bulletin boards, and talked about these issues with their parents. Community involvement is important, but communities only get together if people talk to each other about these issues. Most of the time we don't, other than to commisserate with people who feel the same as we do. Get the conversation started, whether with a formal group, or just an informal meeting. Churches, schools, any social meeting place is a good location. Get the kids involved first, and many times you can then get the parents as well.
