Hi All,

I've planted a few trees myself, but that was for money (which should be your ultimate motivation if you ever decide to go). Last year we came across some land that was planted by Scouts Canada (so I guess you can plant trees through them, on crown land I think), but the tree survival rate wasn't that great...

I also went WWOOFing in Canada, and I would highly reccommend it. It is really great fun, only 35$ for the yearly membership and there are so many projects to get involved in.

I think taking the initiative to plant more trees around your yard or town is great, just make sure you plant native species for the benefit of local wildlife!

I'll underscore the native species thing!
We've got Oriental Bittersweet vines that have somehow naturally hybidized with a local native version and now it's climbing up al whole forest preserve near us and preventing photosynthesis of the trees and strangling them!

The vines get as thick as 6 inches in diameter.
Sorry, need to learn the metric system. Can't state it in metric terms...

In the unfortunate event as a death, I now send a certificate from Plant a Tree USA and have a tree planted in memory of that person. It actually costs less than flowers, makes good sense, is a lasting memory and ecologically friendly.

I haven't heard of this before, but it sounds like a great idea! It's good to
know there's a certificate available for the family. I'll need to look this up.

I do not know fo any site but just wanted to share this...In the city I grew in India, the city counsel decided to mark a plot of land where people could go and plant trees on special occasions like there b'days or anniversarie or just for remembrance. Today there are hundreds of trees planted in that area and more land has been given to the project...
I think this is a great idea to plant a tree and remeber your special days...

It is a wonderful idea and really everlasting. Not only is it better than flowers for a funeral but uplifting for the family to know that the name of the deceased is attached to a living thing for many years. And yes, you can have this done for birthdays or any special occassion.

That is wonderful to replace them but as a punishment, don“t you think it is sending out the wrong message; if you do something wrong, you have to plant a tree?

I know what you mean--when I plant a tree I feel sooo good about it. Maybe they're trying to give those folks a stake in the community. In the future when they pass by those trees maybe they will feel good about having planted them.
