The most difficult part about transforming your closet into an efficient and eco-friendly storage area is getting organized. But if you want to get the most out of your clothes, this is a necessary evil you will have to face. By following the suggestions below, you can stop being frustrated by a messy closet and wear all of your favorite clothes that might have become lost over the years.

First, set aside some time for yourself so you can thoroughly organize your clothing. If you haven’t done this in a few years, you might need a weekend. Knowing what you have can prevent you from buying new clothes that you don’t need. So start piling clothes into categories. This will help you later when you put everything away, because you will want your t-shirts, long sleeve shirts and sweaters in different areas of your closet.

Designate two piles for clothing that you either don’t fit into or no longer wear. Most of the clothing can be donated, but worn out jeans and shirts can be turned into rags and dusters. Take pieces that are in good condition to secondhand clothing stores that buy clothes. Whether you sell your clothes, donate them or transform them, you are still recycling and reusing these items.

After everything is organized, you can put in some green installations. If you never air dry any of your jeans or towels, setup a drying rack or add another clothing bar to your closet if you have room. The more items you air dry, the less electricity you will have to use.

If you need some more space, look for adjustable shelves or containers made from composite wood paneling or bamboo. These additions can be used to store your sweaters or delicates such as pantyhose and other undergarments. Shelving can also be a place to line up your shoes and purses.

To keep your closet smelling fresh, lightly mist a mixture of water and essential oil into the air. This is especially helpful if your clothes smell like smoke from being at a restaurant or bar. Plus, this is a natural way to reduce odors, and it will also enhance your mood.

Once your closet is in tiptop shape, the best way to keep it this way is to limit your shopping and sift through your closet a couple times a year to make sure you’re wearing everything.

This is quite ambitious but very well thought-out. A comprehensive and categorical plan. And the follow-up plan a couple of times a year seems reasonable. The hard nut to crack is getting the initial task done, but you have set out a fine blueprint.

I've been organizing people's closets for close to 20 years. Not only clothing is stored in closets. They seem to be the catch all for everything so I'm going to suggest that sorting out one's closet may need to be done in phases. When sorting clothing one might also wish to sort for several charities. A great charity to consider donating professional type clothing to is Image For Success in San Rafael CA or one of their sister locations. Items are in turn given to woman entering the work place and truly boost these woman's self confidence when they have proper attire. You would be surprised how many people still have toxic moth balls in their closets. These need to go and one should consider using dry cleaners that are environmentally friendly. Many closets are not large enough nor would you want the moisture from hanging wet or damp items to dry in this space so best to consider a drying rack or retractable line in the bathroom or laundry room. One space saving tip is to use all the same type of hangers. Don't forget to recycle old plastic and wire ones and for that matter plastic garment bags from dry cleaners and department stores. Consider what type of adjustable shelving units you buy. The inexpensive ones that are often "do it yourself" are loaded with formaldehyde. Bad for you and the environment. Depending how far you want to go with the notion of "greening" your closet there are not eco friendly hangers you can buy and energy efficient lightening should be considered. You have some nice tips in your article, You might consider a follow up.
