Sierra Club The Green Life e-newsletter sends out a bunch of simple daily green tips via email. I don’t always have time to read all the tips, but every now and then, I take a peak and see what new green tips I can learn about. I learned a good one some weeks ago about keeping track of our individual green effort and the consequences of these efforts. I think this is a wonderful idea and I want to pass it along.
So here’s how. Grab a recycled notebook (or type into an online journal or speak into a tape-recorded) and keep track of your green efforts. Ask yourself: What immediate impact did you see happen as a result of your green change? For example, did mentioning a recycling bin program to your gym as an easy way to make extra money cause them to start recycling? Did answering your neighbor’s question about your eco-gardening methods surprise her? Did you then offer to help her have a green thumb of her own? Has becoming a vegetarian helped you loose the weight you’ve always wanted to loose? Do you smell better since you switched to organic or homemade bath products? Have you saved money as a result of insulating your home and switching to more energy efficient appliances and light bulbs?
Keep track of when you are least eco-friendly. What caused you to have such a heavy foot print today? Can you prevent this from happening again? Do you plan on making up for it somehow?
Write down what your biggest green obstacles are. For example is lack of recycling programs in your area a hug obstacle? Is it non-eco friendly points of you? Is it money to pay for these products? Can trying to live green become overwhelming or hopeless some times? How do you overcome these types of obstacles?
You may find keeping track of your green life eye opening and eventually you may even want to share your green eye-opening experience with the rest of the world. Maybe we can learn something from your experience.
