12 Ways to Keep Carpet Out Of Landfill

I’ve recently had to pull more carpet out of other rooms and was determined to find several ways to recycle or reuse it so that it doesn’t end up in the landfill. I wanted to find several ways so that I can reuse all or most of the carpet instead of just a pieces of it. I found some of these ideas to be very useful. I hope you do too.

1. I’ve mentioned this in a previous article, but one of the simplest ways to reuse an old carpet is to cut it up in to several porch size welcome mats. When one becomes too dingy replace it with a new cut out.

2. You can also cut into pieces to use in your garage. For example, in the winter my garage floor is freezing cold. Lining it with carpet would make it much warmer for my feet.

3. Carpet can also be used to place where you park your car. This way if your car ever leaks oil it will stain the carpet and not the garage floor.

4. Clean the carpet as much as you can, cut it up and make into cat scratching post for your cats, or your neighbors cats, or your sister’s cats. The choice is yours.

5. Cut larger size pieces and use these large pieces to line the bed of your pickup truck to prevent your truck from scratches and to keep items in the back from sliding around so easily.

6. Call local animal shelters and ask them if they would like used carpet to line the animal cages with. If they say yes, then donate it to them.

7. Use pieces of your old carpet to kneel on when gardening. This will provide some cushion for your knees and will help keep grass stains of your skin if your are wearing shorts or clothes if you are wearing pants.

8. When it rains it becomes difficult to walk through the grass without getting mud on your shoes. Cut squares or circles out of your carpet and carry them with you when you need to walk through your wet yard. Place them in front of you as you step to make temporary stepping-stones.

9. This next idea is a bit controversial because of the chemicals some carpets contain and can leak into the soil, but some people place carpet pieces in their gardens, cover it with compost and let it become mulch. This helps keep some weeds from growing in the garden. Cutting holes in where you want your plants to grow will allow your plants to flourish where you would like them. Slices of carpet can also be used between plants rows to provide a walk way and help prevent weed growth.

10. If your old carpet is still in good shape it is possible to donate to charities like Habitat for Humanity.

11. Search for a center that will cleanse, rejuvenate, restyle, and reinstall your carpet in your home as fresh carpet. There may be a center near you.

12. Also check out the recycling centers at this website. Maybe one is in your area.
