Host a Clothing Swap Party

Every day you get up and get dressed, but recycling through your same old clothing can become boring and predictable. While your first instinct might be to shop for new clothes, you should consider hosting a clothing swap party instead. Not only is it an eco-friendly way to get clothes, it can also spare your wallet.

The purpose of a clothing swap party is to share your unwanted clothing along with other’s gently used items so you can trade it in for something else…something better. These parties are becoming more popular due to the down economy, but they are also a creative way to accumulate new clothes. If you have never hosted one of these parties before, here are some tips:
  • Create rules for your clothing swap party. For example, set a minimum number of items for people to bring, but they can bring more pieces if they want. Also, request that everyone irons and hangs up their clothes for better viewing.
  • Send an email invitation to your friends and family. Try to keep your guests' sizes in mind, so you can make sure that no one will be left out of the swap. If people are looking for certain types of items (dress shirts, work pants, etc.), note this in the invitation.
  • Transform your home into a clothing store by setting up tables and garment racks, if you have them. If people bring accessories (jewelry, handbags, scarves, etc.), it will be easier to view them if they are neatly displayed.
  • Provide organic food and drink, because it's a thoughtful touch that can make the event more enjoyable.
By the end of the night, you could end up with a whole new wardrobe or at least part of one. And you could create an updated style for yourself too. If any clothing remains, it can be sent to Goodwill or another charitable cause. Lastly, remember to schedule another event in a few months and decide who will host it this time. Having these parties on a regular basis can help you get out of your rut and prevent you from buying new clothes.
