Christmas might be over but that doesn’t mean that the gift giving stops here. On New Year’s Day, you will have a clean slate to work with, but soon enough you will start receiving invitations to birthdays, baby showers, weddings, graduations, etc. Before you know it, you will have your whole year of giving planned out. However, this year you can give your gifts in a more eco-friendly way by using biodegradable wrapping paper. Little Kay Gardens has created an innovative way to wrap gifts, and for all of the giving you do, you should keep some on hand for those special days.
Lynn Shoshani, a mom of two girls, created Flower Wrapping Paper. Shoshani explains, “Throwing out birthday party gift wrap made me realize I had become a significant contributor to the landfill crisis in our country…so this [past] summer I did something about it.” She made her dreams come to reality by getting in touch with Jim Johansen, a horticulturist and founder of the Triumph Plant Company. Together, Shoshani and Johansen created the Flower Wrapping Paper.
The Flower Wrapping Paper is pre-seeded and made from 100% recycled paper. It’s available in three colors (light blue, lavender and pink), and a package comes with four large sheets of pastel colored wrapping paper, six gift cards and a nest of raffia in recyclable bags. The paper is currently only available from Little Kay Garden’s website, and the company ships anywhere in the United States. This spring they will have light green and yellow Flower Wrapping Paper also available. Shoshani says, “We are looking into other eco-friendly products and into printing the paper with designs for the fall of 2009.”
The wrapping paper is like an extra gift in itself. The special people you buy gifts for can enjoy the main present, and they can also have fun planting the paper (see planting instructions on their website). Keep in mind that this paper can be used to wrap presents, and it can be used as tissue paper since it’s double ply. Unwrapping gifts is one of the best parts of receiving presents, and since the wrapping paper can be easily recycled, there is no reason to feel guilty for throwing out wrapping paper anymore.

My granddaughter loves flowers of all kinds. This wrapping paper will make a double present for her.Even better, the paper comes in her very favourite colour : pink!
We received some and my kids planted theirs and it began t o germinate in 5 days!
It’s a cute idea, But I’d only use it for someone I KNEW was going to plant it.. I think most people wouldn’t be bothered.
I actually use flowering printer paper to make cigar band style wrap for when I’m selling my soaps at the farmer’s market.
