The dreaded season has caught up with us again—tax season (dun, dun, dun)! Although you might not always look forward to April 15 of every year, it’s an important deadline to abide by if you don’t want to pay fines. By now you might already have your W9 and other forms showing proof of employment, so it’s time to get yourself organized so you can file your taxes in an earth friendly way.
- Before you even dare to look at your receipts and employment forms, you need to settle your mind with an invigorating cup of fair trade coffee or organic tea. At least you can take joy in something while you prepare your 2009 taxes.
- Sift through your box or file of receipts and payment stubs. If you notice that you could have half of the paper waste by accepting online payments through Paypal or keeping copies of receipts online, start doing this for 2010. Plus, it can be a whole lot easier to digitally sort through paperwork.
- Think about any environmentally friendly additions you have made to your home. Are there are eco-friendly deductions that you qualify for?
- File your taxes online with a service such as TaxAct Online or Free File. This will reduce your paper waste, and you won’t have to worry about having stamps or envelopes. If you do owe money back, you can simply pay by credit card or have it taken out of your refund. Then you don’t have to bother writing out a check. Also, don’t forget to have your refund electronically deposited if you get one—going this route will ensure that you get your money faster too.
When you stay organized and use electronic filing, online payment systems, direct deposit, etc., preparing your taxes can be a quick and easy process every year. The faster you can put the tax season behind you the better. Plus, if you receive a refund, you can enhance your life with some earth friendly necessities such as green cleaning products, updated lighting or organic clothing. Then you can be well on your way to living a greener lifestyle in 2010.
