Many of the problems that face our world can be solved through the power of the three 'R's: Recycling, Reusing and Reducing. We need to recycle the things we do not use anymore, reuse the things we can, and reduce what we buy by recycling and reusing. There are many ways to do this, and some can even benefit those in developing countries, or those who have suffered a disaster and need our help. Usually when we think of helping someone in the developing world, we will donate money, give blood or buy food. However, one aspect of a poor existence that is forgotten on many occasions is shoes. Shoes are vitally important. Our feet are constantly in contact with our world, and when we don't have shoes they can be prime sources for infection.
For those people who have no shoes in the developing world, walking down the street can lead to stepping on something dirty, which creates an infection. If that infection is not treated, death can follow.
Hence, there are many organizations out there who want to give your old shoes to someone who could really use them. Probably one of the best organizations for this is Soles4Souls. This is an organization that donates shoes, both new and used, to the people who need them around the world. They do not just limit themselves to the developing world either. There are plenty of people in Canada and the United States who need shoes, and they provide those shoes. In fact, after the large disasters of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita and the Asian Tsunami, Soles4Souls donated over one million pairs of shoes.
For several years now, Soles4Souls has been putting shoes on people's feet and helping them get a bit of a lift in life. You would be surprised how a pair of shoes, even used, can change a person's outlook and personality. For them, they no longer have to watch wear they step and they can hold their head high and begin dreaming of a better life. There is much that we can do to help those who need help, and giving them shoes is just one way that we can all help.
