Green Facebook

One of the most popular websites on the Internet today is Facebook. If you have not used Facebook, then you are in the minority, and if you have not heard of Facebook, then you live a very isolated existence. Facebook allows millions of users to come together through social networking. It has allowed old school friends to get reaquantied, it has helped families keep in touch online and it has changed the Internet as we know it. One amazing aspect of Facebook is the applications it offers to everyone, free of charge. With your Facebook applications, you can send kisses, play games and do thousands of mundane things to help your day pass by at work.

However, Facebook applications also have another purpose and it comes in the form of going green. In fact, many Facebook applications are allowing people to do green things by simply using Facebook. Using Facebook is not that hard for many people, and who can say how many productivity hours have been lost through the use of Facebook.

One such application is the Green my Vino application from Village Green Energy. When this application is added to an application, friends can send other friends gifts. For each gift they send, a pledge is made to wineries in northern California that grow wine in methods that use renewable energy.

SunChips has an application that for every person who adds it, they donate $1 towards the goal of $50,000 that will be used to plant trees in Greensburg, Kansas, which had most of its trees destroyed in a tornado.

Lastly, there is (lil) Green Patch, which is an application that saves the rain-forest. Members get a green rectangle on their Facebook page that they can decorate with cute garden people, mushrooms and flowers and with each addition, money goes from sponsors to save the rain-forest. So far, 29,259,567 square feet of rain-forest has been saved.

Leave it to Facebook to create the ability for people to enjoy Facebook, while helping to save the environment. Now your unproductive behavior at work can be used in a way that saves trees, the rain-forest and protects the Earth from harmful practices that are not environmentally-friendly.

I don't have an account on Facebook but I think that this is a great idea to get the younger people thinking about living more green.

SunChips! I absolutely love them. I had heard of Facebook here and there but had no idea what it was. But, I can relate to SunChips. I wonder if I did an application I could get them to start making the cinnamon ones again? :)

This is a great idea and I hope a lot more people take advantage of it to help the environment. But I am a big one for staying in touch in person and not on the Internet. For friends and family I like the personal touch and not the electronic.
