Green ideas for summer
Posted on Fri Apr 25 2008
- Get active. Summer time is a great time to reduce your carbon footprint by reducing your reliance on vehicles. Warmer weather allows you to get outdoors more often and take advantage of the sunshine. Walk, bike, or rollerblade as much as you can in place of driving. It may take a little bit longer but the rewards are well worth the challenge. - Get involved. There are a number of environmental agencies and organizations that offer volunteer positions during the summer (and winter) for people interested in helping out with the environment. Anything from planting trees and community cleanups to dandelion and bird watches to help scientists determine the extent of climate change. To find some great volunteer opportunities look at http://www.ec.gc.ca/volunteers-benevoles/index_e.cfm?page=2&sel=programs§ion=6 - Help others get involved. Have your neighbors join you in a neighborhood cleanup or organize a community sidewalk sale to find new homes for things that might otherwise have ended up in the landfills. Community gardens are another great way to create friendships with your neighbors and help benefit the environment. - Get green. Start leading a greener lifestyle by reducing your use of vehicles, electricity, and water. If possible grow your own vegetables and get food from local farmers to decrease the emissions caused by transporting food from far away. - Take part in the Canadian environmental week from June 1st-7th to help protect and strengthen out natural world and help raise awareness for environmental concerns and how to help. Summer time is a great time to get active and involved in environmental issues and hopefully develop habits that will last all year long and for the rest of your life. http://www.ec.gc.ca/default.asp?lang=En&n=8B2F9F48-1 has some great summer activities and information about helping the environment.
