Green in a Box

Baking soda, cinnamon, lemon and grime – it may not seem the most appealing of combinations, but if you have all four you’ll be able to get some natural cleaning done in your house. Baking soda is great for cleaning sinks, tubs and toilets; vegetable oil with a little lemon makes a great furniture polish and a heated mixture of cloves and cinnamon can be used as a safe environmentally friendly air freshener.

It is natural cleaning tips like this that has inspired a new company called Eco-me to offer a range of eco-friendly starter kits that contain all the items needed to make your own green cleaning products. The boxes currently available at a cost of around $30 each, include a home kit, a baby kit and pet kits, with further green boxes planned in the future.

The dog kit for instance contains biodegradable poo-poo baggies, dog bone shaped biscuit cookie cutter and an essential oil mix amongst other items, along with the instructions to make natural flea & bug Spray, dog clean wipes, dog powder shampoo and dog biscuits.

Putting a green lifestyle in a box isn’t a brand new idea, however, as several other companies are offering similar products. Greensender, for example, sells a ‘green box’ for around $50 containing an eco-friendly aluminum SIGG water bottle, a reusable grocery bag, an energy-efficient cfl light bulb and an organic cotton t-shirt. The idea is to give the recipient a kick start into going green and ditching their plastic bottle and carrier habits. The eco-starter kit from go green gift contains a low-flow shower head, organic coffee and tea and coupons for green products, and the Green Kit company offer a range of boxes for the kitchen stuffed full of eco-friendly cleaning products.

This is a great idea for someone that is wanting to change to a greener lifestyle. Would also make a great gift to encourage others that are not yet "green".
