Good air quality begins in the home and with the actions that we do every day. The little things that we do on a daily basis can really contribute to air pollution and the deterioration of environmental health. These are some of the little things that we can do to improve the air quality in our own homes, develop pollution free attitudes, and contribute positively to the over all health of the planet.
Avoid harmful mold infestations by keeping surfaces in the home clean and dry and keeping a sharp eye out for problems. The kitchen and bathroom are most susceptible to mold because they are the high moisture areas of the house. To get rid of mold and avoid future growth use a solution of vinegar and water to clean those areas with. Water leaks through the roof can also cause major mold problems so make sure to keep an eye out for wear on your roof and signs of water damage in your attic.
Use natural and eco-friendly materials for flooring and furnishings. Vinyl and plastic materials are not only hard on the environment they can also cause your indoor air to be filled with carcinogens from the adhesives often used with them.
Keep lots of plants around the house to purify the air. You could even consider growing some of your own herbs and vegetables indoors in the winter or all year round if you don’t have a garden in the summer. Not only will your plants provide air purification and natural decoration for your home, you will be saving money and reducing reliance on food from the grocery store in the winter that had to be shipped a long way to get to you. This is one of the ways that cleaner air in our homes can lead to cleaner air and less carbon emissions on a larger more global scale.
Everyone wants a clean, fresh smelling home, but try to avoid cleaners and air fresheners that are loaded with chemicals and often come in containers that are difficult to recycle or dispose of. Use more natural options instead like cleaning with lemons or other natural products and keeping potted flowers around the house for natural air fresheners and purifiers.
If your home is older make sure that the paint isn’t lead based because the lead often gets into dust around the home and can lead to serious health problems. If your home is painted with lead based paint have a professional used to dealing with that come in and strip and re-paint the walls.
Always make sure that there is proper air circulation and filtration in your home. Keep surfaces free of clutter and dust and try to use natural cleaning supplies and methods to ensure the health or your family and yourself. Developing habits that ensure clean, unpolluted air in our homes may help us all to work towards a clean and unpolluted environment.
