Making Your Own Cereal

February 2nd, 2009 BY Craig Baird | No Comments

My wife and I have had to ban several cereal companies as a result of one of the commitments we made as part of Our Green Year. Sadly, we are beginning to miss our cereal and we have found that several organic brands of cereal really are not all that good. What options do we have left to us then? Well, we can make our own cereal, which is something many people are beginning to do as an alternative to buying cereal that was most likely made in China under poor conditions and regulations. Remember, just because it says Made in Canada, does not mean it was. There is a loophole in our laws that states if the packaging is more expensive than the contents, it can say “Made in Canada”

If you are thinking of making your own cereal, try out this great recipe.

You will need the following ingredients:

  • Seven cups of cooking oats
  • One cup of wheat germ
  • One cup of wheat bran
  • Half a cup of brown sugar
  • Half a cup of vegetable oil
  • Half a cup of honey
  • Half a cup of water
  • One tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • One cup of dates
  • One cup of pecans

Follow these steps to make the cereal:

  1. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F
  2. Mix oats, wheat germ and wheat bran together in a bowl.
  3. Mix in vanilla.
  4. In another bowl, mix together oil, honey, water and brown sugar.
  5. Stir the two mixtures together in the large bowl. Stir until everything is evenly moist and put it into a large baking dish.
  6. bake for 45 minutes in the oven, stirring every 15 minutes.
  7. Mix in dates and pecans.
  8. Cook for another 15 minutes
  9. Let cool after removing from oven.

There you have it, a great way to put together some wonderful cereal that is organic and healthy. You know exactly what goes into it and that is very comforting. Many cereal may be made with herbicides and pesticides, they may be packaged in unhygienic methods in China and there is the risk that you could get sick from them. Don’t let that happen to you, try out this great cereal recipe and you will probably never go back to the name brand cereals again.
