Changing your A/C's filter is an easy way to increase you’re A/C’s efficiency, cut down on indoor air pollution, decrease your energy bill and help the environment, especially if you use reusable filters.

Reusable A/C filters are exactly what they sound like, they are filters that can be washed and reused over and over again. Unlike disposable A/C filters, which once dirty, are trashed and end up in landfills adding to piles and piles of trash already there. All it takes is a little eco-soap and water. Stay away from any that require toxic chemicals to be cleaned. Note-make sure you dry your replaceable filter well before placing back in. Reusable A/C filters also tend to filter better than disposable filters.

The initial investment of a reusable filter is expensive, but after calculating the prices of disposable ones on your pocket book (especially if you live in an old house with bizarre sized AC filters spaces like mine) you will realize that my using reusable filters you will save money in the long run. Unless of course you buy the dollar filters that only filter the large particles letting everything else flow right through.

To find a reusable filter ask for them at home improvement stores like Lowes, Sears or Home Depot. Also ask a local A/C dealer if they sell them. You can also try Supermarkets such as Super Wal-Mart or Super Target. Last but not least search for them online. The good thing about ordering them online is that they can be custom fit to fit your AC. Many of the ones available in your local stores will probably need to be bought a certain size and then you will need to cut it to size which can be less expensive than having them custom made.

Quick additional tips when replacing filter (reusable or disposable):

a) Vacuum up any dust in the filter compartment

b) Make sure the filter is facing the right direction. There should be some indication on the filter which side is up.

c) Make sure your filter is the appropriate size
