7 More Easy Tips to Save on Fuel this Summer
Posted on Wed May 14 2008
![]() 1. Shade the car. Park under the shade whenever you can, use a vehicle cover for your vehicle, or park your car in the garage. Your car interior will stay cooler for it and your gas will not evaporate as quickly in the heat. An additional benefit to a covered vehicle or parking in the garage is the reduced need to clean off bird dropping. Also consider purchasing and using a windshield shade. A windshield shade blocks sunlight helping to keep heat out of the your vehicle.
2. Avoid sudden (jack rabbit) starts and sudden stops. In other words don’t drive aggressively. Quick starts will consume huge amounts of gas because the engine has to work much harder to get the car up to speed.
3. Don’t get stuck on the road during rush hour. Find out what times rush hour begins and ends and then leave about 15 minutes early to get to where ever it is you need to go. You will save time, patient and gas for it. In addition take shorter routes (unless these routes require you to stop a lot) and drive when there is less traffic (unless it is a much longer route to drive). 4. Don’t keep your foot resting on the break. Breaks are meant for stopping. The slightest pressure on the break places a "mechanical drag" on components and wears them down ahead of time. This "dragging" also requires additional fuel usage, eats up your brake pads and rotors. 5. Tighten the gas cap. Gas will evaporate from the tank if it has an escape so make sure when you twist the cap back on that it is twisted on tight. Then if your car has the door cover make sure it is closed all the way.
6. Don’t idle your vehicle for more than 30 seconds. Cars today are made so that they start quickly. Turning it off and then turning it back on when ready to go is more fuel efficient than letting your vehicle idle. 7. Don’t drive. Instead carpool, ride a bike, take the bus, or walk to your destination. How about a Zip Car? A Zip Car (a community car that you use only when you need it and then return it so the next person can use it.). Another alternative is to do it all from home. Work from home, shop from home, mail letters from home, deposit checks from home (some banks have this online option) and anything else you can think of. Don’t become a hermit though. You want to go out in the real world every now and then, but consider all the things you need to do and then think about the ones you can do from home at least every once in a while. More info. My husband and I have driven Subarus for years, and one of the reasons is that they are very economical on gas. I look at the gas guzzlers with pity as they pump the better part of one hundred dollars into their cars, trucks, and SUVs(not to mention RVs). The truth about oil has been out there for years, and now they are reaping the truth of it.
Excellent Post! THank you for that information. It is difficult living in Southern California were driving is a way of life - thanks
These are great tips and with the price of gas only expected to go higher you can bet we are going to be using them on a daily basis. One thing we have cut back on also is using the air conditioning in the car.
