Unless you have products labeled ‘certified organic’ then you shouldn’t have anything in your bathroom. In frightening reports by the Environmental Working Group and other common chemical researchers it has been discovered that although the chemicals used in products such as shampoos and body soaps pass regulation, if used long term the chemicals can actually accumulate within the body. This can result in a terrible outcome, the accumulated ingredients within the body’s organs can cause disease, health failure and even cancer.
The thousands of chemical compounds that are found in products that are used on a regular basis can damage the liver, brain and central nervous system. The body has natural defenses that have the ability to evolve and adjust to fight all the side effects of most chemicals, but cannot fight the heavy duty caustic ingredients that are now being used.
Some, like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which is found in most shampoos and soaps is also used as an engine degreaser and has the ability to mutate the genetic information found in the body’s cells.
Another, DEA (diethanolomine), is found in more than 600 products sold for home and personal use and has been linked to kidney and liver damage and has caused cancer in studies conducted with rats.
Most products advertised as ‘natural’ or ‘all natural’ contain the chemical Hydroxyhydrocinnamate which can increase the risk of sunburn and is not safe for use on infants. It is actually classified as toxic. It can also cause birth defects if used during pregnancy.
Another frightening reality of these chemicals is that they are used on our children and marketed as beneficial to their age groups. Children’s shampoos that are sold under the guise of ‘no tears’ or ‘no sting’ actually contain anesthetists that disguise the burning sensations that would normally occur. With regular use of these chemicals, the child’s natural body reactions (like stinging, burning sensations, even headaches) are lost as the body is conditioned with habitual use.
Children under the age of four regularly consume more than 40% of their toothpaste. Toothpaste contains the ingredient fluoride which can also be found in some water supplies all over the world. Fluoride is a registered pesticide, is carcinogenic and toxic enough to be used in mice bait. It is more toxic than lead and only slightly less toxic then arsenic. Used in aluminum and steel construction and also in computer chip assembly, some people are forced to wash in water treated with fluoride. It was first used in prison water supplies to keep the convicted complacent and placid and is now found in prescription drugs like Rohypnol and Prozac.
And if all these chemicals are damaging to the human body think of what affect they could have once washed down the drain. Everything that goes down the plug hole will eventually at some point end up in your drinking supply. At water treatment plants the already contaminated water is treated with more chemicals to make it consumable once again. The water treated is often filled with chemicals from not only personal washing, but also from cleaning agents that employ decidedly lethal amounts to get your oven fresh or leave your bath tub sparkling. Healthy eco-alternatives are as easy as the use of baking soda, lemon juice and even vinegar. All usually found in the pantry and more affordable as well as better for your health.
Self-education is the best and most effective way to protect yourself and your family from these sneaky chemicals. Take the time to read labels and familiarize yourself with the ingredients. Buy products from health stores that are labeled ‘certifiable organic,’ and be aware that imported products are not regulated like those produced within the country.
