Those of us who think we’re in a race to cut carbon emissions might be disheartened to learn that the rest of the world is racing in the opposite direction. Despite all the hype, the world’s emissions are increasing at a faster rate now than they did throughout the 1990′s, due in large part to the global economic boom. The developing countries are big drivers of the trend, but no place on Earth is actually successfully weaning itself from carbon. To top it off, the world’s oceans aren’t burying carbon as quickly as they did during the last century, because of changes in ocean and air currents due to — you guessed it! — climate change.
