Green Trashbags

Every time I pull the trash bag from my kitchen trash to take out, I feel bad knowing how long it will take for the plastic trash bag to break down. And consumers don’t have a choice when it comes to going to the grocery store, because there are no alternatives to the plastic trash bags that are offered. But now, we finally have another choice in our trash liners.

A company called BioBag, has introduced a biodegradable trash bag that will break down fast. This gives the environment a chance at having something besides plastic to break down over hundreds of years. That will be a nice change for everyone.

How Fast?

I would say breaking down in 8 to 14 months is very fast for these bags! It has been warned that air tight landfills may take a little longer. But anything beats decades! They can be composted to be disposed of also. It takes 10 to 45 days to break down in a compost pile, and it doesn’t leave any harmful residue behind.

No chemicals have been put into these bags to help them decompose faster. The shelf life of these bags is the same as that of paper plates. It waits until you use it before it starts. Buyers do need to be aware that having a lot of moist trash in these bags can cause them to decompose in your trashcan. This can be a surprise when you go to pull them out and it tears, spilling the contents. But users have adapted by changing their bags more frequently.

BioBags

There are many brands of disposable bags. This particular brand was selected by San Francisco to use in a program that educates the city about recycling and better products for the environment.

This is a great idea for the city of San Francisco because it give residents a healthy option. Most consumers choose plastic bags because there are no other choices offered. But with cities like this bringing these biodegradable bags into the selection, landfills will start to benefit. Until they are more readily available, consumers can always take the initiative and purchase these great bags online at www.biobagusa.com.

I think this is fantastic for the environment. But what is the difference in cost? That is going to be a big difference for a lot of people. I for one am on a limited income and purchase the lowest price trash bags I can find because I can't clean out a dirty trash can due to my health.
