We all love our pets dearly. They are our best friends, our closest confidants and the ones that we can trust above all others. Most of us want nothing bad to happen to our pets, but each day we may slowly be hurting them by feeding them the food we think is good for them.
Most of the pet food that are bought at stores contain byproducts that are made up of a low-grade wastes from the poultry and the beef industries. These are things we would never eat, yet we feed it to our pets. Many of the pet food products we buy contain what is called ’4-D’. ’4-D’ means dead, dying, diseased and disabled. This means that if you see that on the packaging, your animals are being fed the animals that are, you guessed it, dead, dying, diseased and disabled. These are the animals that are not fed to us, I hope, but are happily given to our pets and repackaged as ‘byproducts’.
My wife and I have gone organic and local with our food, so it did not make much sense that we would not be going organic with our pet food. For one of the days of Our Green Year we decided to go all natural with our dog food, only buying dog food that contains no byproducts and is made from natural, and preferably organic ingredients from local suppliers. All of the natural pet foods come from animals that are raised in humane manners, and are not full of drugs. As well, they are preserved with vitamins C and E, and there is no such thing as a byproduct in the ingredients.
All the organic and natural pet foods come from animals that are raised in a humane way, and not pumped full of drugs and hormones, and are preserved with vitamins C and E. That is much better than the ‘byproducts’ that are in pet food.
If you are curious about what exactly goes into a byproduct, here is just a short, ‘fun’ list.
- Cow brains
- Sheep Guts
- Chicken Heads
- Road kill
- Rancid grain (remember the scare from tainted grain from China last year?)
After seeing animals die from the tainted grain last year, my wife and I are not taking chances with our beloved pets.
