School districts in the United States are one sector that has consistently struggled with monetary issues. One of the many costs which school districts struggle with are electricity costs, which can add millions of dollars to costs of operations. However, one company is currently assisting school districts in obtaining low-cost solar energy and therefore saving them electricity costs as well.

The company Amsolar works in cooperation with school districts across the United States. They recently came to an agreement with the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education to install solar panels throughout the district. 5.2 megawatts of solar energy is expected to be generated by the installations. The contract is for twenty-two years and the installation of solar panels is expected to begin this fall.

The agreement between Amsolar and the San Diego school district involves Amsolar being able to use the roofs of the school buildings in exchange for selling the school district low-cost solar-generated electricity. Overall, 23,000 solar panels are expected to be placed on the buildings of approximately 80 San Diego school buildings. In addition, 1,500 solar carports are included in the deal to provide energy to individual schools.

The installation of the solar panels across the San Diego school district is expected to be able to save the school district between $13 and $20 million across the twenty-two years of the agreement. Overall, eleven percent of all electricity needs of the San Diego Unified School District is expected to be able to be provided by the deal.

The deal between Amsolar and the San Diego school district is a strategy which many school districts across the country may begin using. Due to financial issues, solar energy agreements such as this may provide school districts with the ability to reduce overall costs.
