Sea Level Rising Around Indian Islands

Posted on Mon Mar 19 2007

fishingboats.jpgThe Sunderbans, a group of hundreds of islands near India, are experiencing higher than normal sea level rises. Global sea levels rise about 2mm each year, but the levels around these islands are rising 3.14mm a year and this is threatening many low-laying areas. Rising sea levels are also causing erosion, decreasing soil salinity, and even threatening the dwindling tiger population in these islands. This society who depended on farming for survival, is now fishing because they can't rely on traditional crops anymore.

The Sunderban islands are made up of 9,630 sq. km of mangrove swamps and 4 million people.
