When writing your weekly shopping list there are some things you may not want to put on your list. Your support for various products can be just as much, if not more, of a detriment to the environment than not changing your light bulbs to CFLs or not cutting down your shower time etc.. Now if you can afford it, the obvious first choice to be made is to purchase all organic. The number of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides in our soils and waterways are harming our planet in disasterous ways. If you cannot afford to go strictly organic, buy organic in those products you an afford and avoid certain foods. The following foods are at the top of the anti-environment list:
*Meat–pesticides are used in the growing of grain for the animals and much water and land degredation go into the raising of animals for food
*Milk–pesticides are used in dairy cows’ food as well, hormones are commonly given to cows, pesticides have been commonly detected in human breast milk
*Coffee–pesticides are used in the growing of the beans and frequently fair labor is not used
*Peaches–the thin skins cannot resist the pesticides and levels are high after picking
*Apples–much like peaches, pesticide residue is high in apples tested
*Bell Peppers–same as peaches/apples
*Celery–grooves in celery make an excellent place for pesticides to reside
*Strawberries–same as peaches
*Greens (Spinach, Lettuce etc.)–leafy greens often have some of the more highly toxic pesticides used on them
*Grapes–same as peaches
*Potatoes–grown with pesticides and fungicides, potatoes have some of the highest levels of chemicals of all fruits and vegetables
*Tomatoes–same as peaches
