Start an Environmental Club

Extracurricular activities are probably the most fun part of being in school. There are various activities to choose from, so you’re bound to find something that you like. Or you can always create your own club like an environmental club. Environmental clubs can be established in any type of school (kindergarten, elementary, high school and college). The first environmental club I belonged to was in elementary school. We would get together after class to sing environmentally friendly songs and learn ways that we could reduce our waste and save resources. A club like this can be especially valuable for younger children, because it instills compassionate values earl on.

Environmental clubs are simple to start. All you need is at least three members who are regularly involved. In college, you might find that members come and go when their schedule allows. Positions for the President, Vice-President and Secretary should be filled so that the group has a direction and is organized. To recruit members, post flyers or have your school make an announcement. If you want community members to get involved, post an ad in the newspaper. Maybe some of the parents or teachers might want to be involved too.

Once you have club members, you should setup the basics of the club. For example, determine when and where you will meet. Also circulate a sheet that has all of the members’ contact information. Finally, determine what the club’s purpose will be and write up a one-page sheet so potential and current club members know what to expect.

The club should be fun and educational, so schedule events that members will enjoy doing. Some clubs hold fundraisers, peaceful protests and litter cleanups as well as volunteer their time at shelters and green businesses. Also planning presentations or speakers can be an opportunity to educate others in the school or community, and these are also ways to recruit more members.

Having others around with the same values and concerns can make school more enjoyable. Plus, it’s a purposeful activity that can help make a difference in your school, community and world. You never know who you might inspire to live a more environmentally friendly life.
