The city of Kristianstad, Sweden, gets enough biogas from its sewage treatment plant to provide heat and hot water to 80,000 apartments and run 22 city buses. Now some residents of Victoria, B.C. are looking to Kristianstad for ideas on how to handle the city's sewage effluent, which the provincial government has mandated must begin to be treated next year. Stephen Salter of the Victoria Sewage Alliance argued at a public meeting earlier this month that following Kristianstad's example will save taxpayers money in addition to providing green, renewable power. He says that the Capital Regional District is approaching the idea of using such innovative technology with an open mind.
