My brother keeps bantams for their eggs and then to eat. I would like to do the same but there are so many local laws that it is almost impossible to keep animals for food in the town.

We used to live near a cow farm and it was great to buy a cow every year, have it prepared, and feed us for practically the whole year.

My father in law had the miniature goats. They were really cute but one was really mean. They did help keep the grass from being mowed all the time.

My father’s cousin was a veterinarian, and he kept sheep for mowing his lawn. He started to do it about thirty years ago and never had any problems.
I’ve always fantasized having a cow for milk and chickens for eggs, but I might be too lazy to do it properly. Oh yeah, and live in an area where it’s allowed!

Sorry, we just have dogs as pets and would never consider using them for food, lol. But I did grow up on a farm where we raised cows and chickens for food.

I do not think I would be strong enough to raise an animal and then just eat it! I know it sounds ridiculous because I do’nt have a problem eating meat from shops…..but then animals at home..become like part of the family..

I agree, I do still eat meat but much less than previously and I really would have to be starving before I could eat an animal that I knew. I guess I am just soft.

I grew up on a small farm, where we raised chickens and pigs for food, but I could never do that myself. I get far too attached to animals.

Ann Arbor now allows us to raise chickens if you meet distance requirements from neighbors and get thier permission. I remember researching quiet breeds. I also wanted to raise rabbits, but daughter and wife said they wouldn’t harvest them, so we didn’t go there, and dropped the chicken idea for a while, but we now get eggs from one of daughters friends, so we’re bridging the knowledge experience gap. I remember a poem one time by my Dad as I recall it said as part of it. “Don’t let me know,How the cow did bellow, don’t let me know how the hammer did fall, just give me my package of celophane MOO”. I think it pulls out on display our disconnetedness from our sustainance(sp?).

I was in 4H but kept to baking, canning, and sewing rather than raising animals. Silly me, I told my mom I wanted to raise a sheep because lambs are so cute, and my friend was raising one…then she clued me into what happened to the sheep eventually. I’d never thought of that, city girl as I was!

We have animals as pets. I have thought about getting chickens for the eggs. Honestly I don’t think that I could raise an animal at home for food. I think I would become to attached.
