Ergoa,

I never said Cali was weird. I live in Cali. I said that living off the grid in Guadamala as a kid was a bit weird.

lol very true… that actually just reminded me of the movie “The Village” anyone seen it? Basically it’s a few dozen people who decided to cut them selves off from society…. bough a very large piece of land and used fear to make sure nobody left the village… interesting topic
Awesome movie!

I have never lived off the grid, nor known anyone that has. I don’t think I would be able to do it. I know my kids would greatly protest.

Off grid is a necessity where getting electricity via ‘normal’ means is too expensive. We lived off grid for quite some time, but I’ll admit that I really really missed my washing machine which we couldn’t get enough power to operate.

Well, we’re completely off the grid for now, but we’ll probably hook into the public water system when we can. I’d like my own well but it probably won’t happen for another five years. My older kid thinks we’re crazy, but I can tell he appreciates what we’re doing.

We know several families that are nearly off the grid; one with a really nice solar power array, and others who are heating their house only with wood and pellet stoves. We are really proud of their achievements.

I live completly off the power grid, and use wind and solar for power. I do grow a bit of a garden and can some of it, but with just myself I dont need much.

Well my little sister is enjoying her first snow of the season in her wood warmed home and the economic downturn hasn’t impacted her a bit.

Wow, that is impressive. I was wondering how much space it requires and what is the approximate initial outlay to achieve this?

I have close to 10,000 into it so far, and it dont take up all that much space

Thanks for the information, it seems quite a tempting option, I live in a fairly small house with a small is garden so I wasn’t sure if I could do it.
