In Edinburgh Scotland, the city council approved a scheme in which dirvers will be charged according to the fuel effiiciency of their vechicles. A drop in parking prices for those who drive green while a massive increase for those who prefer the guzzlers. This idea has also been implemented in parts of London also. I believe if more areas push for this, the SUV´s and 8 cylinders will have their day ended.

that’s a great idea, really nice to see that more and more governments are looking at ways of reducing pollution

Its nice but there are not enough pay for parking spot in the world for it to be truly effective.

Hey it would be nice not to have to pay so much for parking. I’d love that.

It’s a good idea. The theory of polluter pays is an important one because it encourages people to make better choices.

I think Mick is right though…there aren’t enough spaces to make a real difference. It’s just one small piece of the puzzle. There is also the issue of the guy who can afford a Hummer also being able to afford more expensive parking, while the guy driving a 1978 Ford LTD to work because he can’t afford anything newer is going to be unduly penalized.

At the very minimum, it is great to see people trying to find solutions. I agree with the points made here. In the long run, one can only hope that many more people will be able to afford “greener” cars.

I think it’s a great idea, I hope other cities and countries follow suit. It’s a good point that was made that people unable to afford a new green car would be socked with the extra charges. This certainly isn’t fair; there has to be a way around it. If the city government worked out this scheme, they could certainly work a bit longer to work this problem out. Perhaps a sticker or some other kind of differentiation?

It would be nice to beleive that the additional profits from operations like this would be put towards green projects.

I do in some ways think it is a good idea but in some cases right now people cannot afford to buy a hybrid car. Or really any car for that matter so penalizing them I don’t think is going to help make people think very highly of the reasons behind the change. There are people that do whatever they can financial wise to help that really should not be panelized. Just my opinion on the matter though.

I have to disagree with you Tater03. If someone can afford an 8 cylinder Lincoln Navigator SUV gas guzzler, they should pay the price. Perhaps then gas prices could drop or they would think twice. A smaller owner of a mini or other 4 cylinder would not pay as much because even though they are not hybrids, they are not the culprits. I also think that large trucks should not be used for long distance and instead re-open rail frt. The amount of fuel they use is enormous. One fill up costs approx.$700 in fuel.

I think maybe the guzzler cars we are talking about are older model cars that are much cheaper to buy. I aggree that if someone has the coin to buy a Navigator should pay through the nose; someone who drives an older car because that’s all they can afford shouldn’t be penalized.

How about someone who has a gas guzzler for justifiable reasons, a business for instance? Should they be penalised too, when they use the vehicle for personal use, or should they go out and get a second vehicle?

Just playing devil’s advocate! It’s a really tough one to make fair to all.

I see the point about gas guzzlers, but here in UK the physical size of cars is becoming a bit of a problem as well. People are driving bigger and wider cars that don’t fit the spaces provided in most car parks. I can understand that some people may have a business need for a larger vehicle, but in any town you will see parents driving their children to school in massive vehicles with bars on the front, it is ridiculous a hedgehog is the only the only wildlife they are likely to encounter on a town road!
