Hi,

I am a researcher at SmartMoney magazine and I found this forum as I research for a story about solar power.

We would love to speak to anyone who uses a range of solar tools and gadgets, so please get in touch by emailing lwitherington@hearst.com and help us inform our readers.

Thanks!

Laurence

Well i have a solar cell calculator and I use a ‘Solio’ charger for my phone and ipod if that is what you mean. In my grandmother’s village in Cyprus they use solar panels for heating hot water…

I came across this article and found some interesting solar devices, so I decided to go with the solar powered wrist watch. http://www.gtrecycling.com/faq/environment/10-green-gadgets-for-everyday-usage/

It is so amazing what has been developed so far. There is hope for our future, if we’re smart enough to take it.

a solar cooker? That sounds very interesting Atula. How does it work? Do you have to leave it outside? :)

I’m not sure such a thing would be efficient over here where we have fewer hours of sunshine.

I’m not sure we are as educated as we think. There are new products becoming available every day.

Well…the solar cooker works fabulously around here because of the amount of sunshine we get. It is a square tin suitcase like thing, which has a mirror on the inside of the lid and the interiors of the box itself are painted black. The device comes with 4 round cooking vessels with lid which too are painted black. Whatever you wish to cook, like maybe boil beans, or a cake, you leave that in the box, and place the solar cooker at an angle such that the sunlight is reflected from the mirror into the black surface….in 2 hours you can cook 4 things with no use of electricty, fuel or your own labour….:)
needless to say the food cooked is much more healthier and tastier..

That is awesome, thanks for sharing that link atula. This looks like something, with a little creativity, that could be made at home.

In fact during my school science project..I did make a solar cooker out of an old box…it was easy to make and felt so great when I actually boiled some potatoes in it….:)
Here is an ehow I found,
