Get prepared for a blitz of green programming in November, as the NBC Universal group, which includes Universal Pictures, NBC TV and the Universal Studios theme parks, will be greening up its entire network, beginning with the launch of the ‘Green is Universal’ initiative.

Starting with a launch week from November 4-10, the campaign aims to raise environmental awareness across a wide group of viewers and web surfers. Over 150 hours of eco-themed programming will air on NBC’s range of channels during the week, including some ‘green chat’ during the Sunday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, and spots on NBC Nightly News on topics such as water, wind, bio-fuels, nuclear power, and how to green your house.

Green content will also crop up across the group’s websites, which include the news site MSNBC.com, the iVillage lifestyle sites, and the new greenisuniversal website, which will launch on November 4.

The Universal theme parks in Orlando and California will also be going green by hosting eco-fairs, where visitors can try out the latest eco-friendly technology, pick up free recycled products and get green tips from eco-experts. They’ll also be able to learn about the new bio-fuel initiatives for the theme parks and discover more about the new Simpsons Ride coming in 2008, which will feature eco-friendly variable speed motors and energy-efficient lighting.

As well as raising awareness NBC Universal has also been setting an example for other major corporations. In May this year the Universal Studios lot installed its first solar energy system, the largest in the industry, and they recently announced that will be aiming to achieve a LEED Silver rating for their new West Coast News Headquarters.

NBC Universal appear to have all angles covered for their green week – even in their launch program on the Today show, which will feature simultaneous live broadcasts from the North and South poles and the equator, so get ready for a green message to come at you from all directions.

I truly hope that it does not, but I am glad to see Universal Studios is becoming more involved in the Green Thing
