Media has everyone confused thinking that the way to be healthy is by living in some sort of sterile bubble. The pesticides will do your body much more harm than a bug ever did. Some bacteria is good for your body, that is why we eat yogurt. Bad bacteria won’t bother you if your immune system is functioning properly. That is why it’s important to eat healthy… no McD’s. You can’t get away from bacteria, no matter what the media tells you. It’s all over whatever you are touching right now. The world is far from sterile and shouldn’t be.

I guess I am a noob to the whole organic thing. I am trying to understand why it is better. Doesn’t food that is sprayed have less damaging bacteria on it? Does organic food basically mean that it hasn’t been chemically treated for pests, bacteria and other harmful things? Or is it that the chemicals are more dangerous for us than the pests and bacteria? Shouldn’t we be using better chemicals then?

I’m not sure that it’s true that cancer is caused by that. The fact is that humans are living longer and so we’re being killed like cancer and heart disease moreso than dying at younger ages from other illnesses, accidents or violent deaths. There are still plenty of reasons to eat organic though.

Maybe this will change your mind: link

It is a link to the pollution found in newborns. “Pollution in people” has only recently began to be studied by the Environmental Work Group. The “pollution” is a variety of chemicals that includes many cancer causing substances including pesticides.

To quote my former husband who works in a hospital, “We all have cancer these days. It’s just a matter of wether they find it before we die of something else.”

I always support local over big chains – I love little mom and pop stores and hate seeing them being take over by the Walmarts of the world.

You are not washing pestisides off organic produce, kindly do keep up. There is soil that it was grown in, and many hands that have handled the produce that may prompt someone to wash their fruits and veggies. Sometimes there are not organic versions of the provender you need. Betyer boots I wash my un-organic fruits and veggies.

I like what you say about many hands handling the produce. This is a true story, I kid you not:

I was in the grocery store and turned my head just in time to see the produce guy with his finger stuck up his nose. He then wiped his hand on his shirt and picked up a mango (or whatever it was). I was so appalled I bought the veggie wash. Yep, I fell for it. Call it an impulse buy. It is called Fit, claims to be natural (its basically baking soda, citric acid and ethyl alcohol from corn), and leaves my produce squeaky clean. I am almost out of it now, and will be reusing the bottle with a baking soda solution, or a vinegar solution.

Just thought I would share that story. Organic or not… wash those veggies! For your health. :D

I can see how many people would fall for an ‘impulse buy’ like that! It’s very true and solid advice however; always wash vegetables no matter the source. I think a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that just because produce is organic that it’s somehow ‘magically clean’.

it may be magically clean from chemicals, but certainly not from the great unwashed who are usually the people who handle it the most on its way into our shops….

Where I live, there are lots of local farms and I love to shop at the farmer’s markets. I’m afraid that the term “organic” may soon become more of a merchandising technique (although I really hope not), which is why I prefer to support my local farmers.

When properly washed, there are no chemicals on organic food to ingest. Regularly grown products are treated with chemicals all through the growth phases which would lead me to believe that the chemicals are part of the food. :o

Am I wrong?

dangerous? quite the opposite. It’s free of chemicals used to make food look aesthetically pretty, free of the chemicals that are sprayed to do who knows what else.

Ofcourse the downside to organic is the cost. But in the long run, you’re better off going with organic.
