So if you have been reading any of the news from Canada lately, you have probably heard story after story of the Ontario government in some way wasting large amounts of money on green energy initiatives that give almost nothing back in relation to their initial costs and initial promises.

Frankly, they should leave most of these decisions up to the people who run the system, and have an intimate knowledge of what will and will not work, or what may need to be done to implement something. So when I came across a website created by the power workers union of Ontario, it made made sit up and take notice. There plan seems very pragmatic and well thought out. But I have little to compare to. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how this plan stacks up to others. is it a good plan?

Not being in Canada, I’m actually very unaware of this. Certainly, it’s worth some research and study.

I don’t live in Canada either, so I hadn’t heard about this. Research is good though!

Not from Canada also. I do agree that this should be looked into though.
Not just the issue itself should be researched but also the source of the original info. Oftentimes, such stories are put out by someone with a vested interest.

You do have to be careful and read about things from a couple of sides. I honestly don’t believe most of what I read anymore.

I am not from Canada but I do thank you for informing me.

I find that I do that more and more these days OrryMain. It often takes some research to find an answer to something.

And the problem is that many of us don’t have time to do that research, and that makes life much more difficult.

So true, research is very time consuming. And even more time consuming is wading through information looking for accurate facts and data.

It also depends on how technical they get. I’m really not that tech minded.

Well regardless of whether you’re from Canada or not, you can have an opinion on this. Basically the government is trying to get on the peoples side, and is throwing billions of dollars implementing “green initiatives.” The problem is, politicians just know OF the technology, they don’t know the intimate details that someone in the industry would, hence money is hemorrhaging out of the system, energy prices are skyrocketing, and they have added about 2% production capacity to the grid.

They want to look good, and they want Canada to be #1 in clean technology. The problem is, those technologies simply aren’t there yet. They will take over one day, and research should be funded, not massive implementation of technology that is unproven. Also Ontario was already 70% powered by non emitting sources, 45% nuclear, 25% hydro wind ect.

So I’m saying, shouldn’t the energy professionals create these plans, and not politicians who have agendas that are very short term?

A good government will find the experts that know what they are doing, and throw the money at THEM… with the brief being to find good cost effective ways to go green.

Unfortunately governments all over the planet are now jumping on the green bandwagon, in the rush to be seen as the greenest… with absolutely no common sense to back it all up with.

It is good that the government want to support green issues, but throwing money at an issue is not the answer. It is important to get ordinary people to understand the issues and to support change.

You are right Stavy. It probably happens because they want quick fixes, but lasting change doesn’t happen like that.

I have to echo Orry’s thoughts and say that I don’t believe everything I read (NOT talking about this issue in particular, just news items in general). Seems that everyone has gotten so good with creating spin now that no one knows what’s actually right and not spun into epic proportions.
