Our city just got some new fancy dancy conveyor belt to help with sorting ewaste that gets tossed in the trash. I guess that’s progress. |

It’s a step in the right direction at least! I wish that people wouldn’t throw it in the trash, but unfortunately many do. |

It is, but I want the more fancy one that sorts everything so it’s easier on us. |

That would be nice. |

It sure would and since I love convenience, it would be a hit with me. |

Why can’t you just sort it before you put it out for recycling? It is not hard and it doesn’t take up extra time. We have been doing it that way in our town for a number of years and it works very well. |

Maybe I am missing something but I don’t see the point in fancy gadgets when people can sort their own recycling. |

The advantage of having one recycling bin is that it encourages more people to recycle. People are less likely to recycle if they have to work for it–especially if no one is making them do it. It also creates jobs. I honestly don’t mind sorting my recycling, but when I lived in the dorms in college, our system was very complex! If I remember right, there were 8 bins just for recycling. |

People will sort and recycle if there is a penalty for not doing so! Providing more recycling and less general waste collections goes a long way towards changing behaviour. |

Recycling creates jobs anyway. We have 4 recycling bins plus a clothing collection. We can put out as much recycling as we like but there is a limit on general waste so people are very happy to recycle. |

Some folks won’t do it without encouragement of some type and it is not a legal requirement to recycle. The fancy equipment makes it easier for the workers at the center and to ensure that the landfills are full of things that are not e-waste. |

Recycling is not a legal requirement here either but they have done very well in getting people to recycle by making recycling easy (they will collect as much as you can sort and leave out) and making it less easy to deal with a lot of general waste. They only collect that bin once per fortnight and they don’t take extra, so if you create more waste you have to take it to the tip yourself. |

I want to see stores and restaurants offer recycling options! I hate being out in public and not having the option to recycle something. |

I’d be for that. It would be interesting to see h ow many people would take the time to put their waste in the correct bins. |

I think it goes back to how easy it is to do something. I think if there’s a recycling bin and a trash can, people would make an effort, especially with commonly recycled items. If they had the 8 bin system that my college dorm had, they might get frustrated and not do it. |
