As far as i can tell(well guess) pencils are Biodegradable They are made of wood, graphite, (both natural) and then a small layer of paint with a small about of metal and an eraser. Compared to a pen the pencil is ver eco freindly. Think of all the pens that litter our land and garbeg dumps because of schools and offices..etc…Should we ban pens and stick with pencils?

You know I never really thought about it before but I would have to agree that pencils would be a lot better. But now that I write that what about what it takes to make the pencils? I would imagine that might effect the enviroment also.

I will do a lot of things for the environment, but I’m afraid I’d have to draw
the line at using pencils… just can’t do it. It fades and isn’t permanent like
ink… so mailing things would be a horror. Journals and legal records would
fade and disappear in as little as a decade. Nope, couldn’t do it!

Well I could probably do it. I mean most people have printers (so they could print out the information for mailing things and legal documents) and for journals and such put a sheet of laminating paper over it.

You know this is one of those issues that will be a 50-50 thing forever. A lot of people prefer pencils and a lot of people prefer pens. Both sides have valid points. Pens use aim which is more permanent and is required on most legal documents. Pencils are more natural but any overtime. Even if we get away with both and use printers we would still need something for a permanent signature. We need to develop something that writes permanently that is eco-friendly and doesn’t destroy trees and then when you develop something other than paper, which also destroys trees to write and print on. That’s the only solution guys.

Isn’t it funny how this site has opened our eyes to so many things we never think about? I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

I never even thought about the legal documents and stuff like that.
That is what I like about this site that it has made me think about things that I would never even have thought of before.

I never really thought about it, but I guess it could go either way. I personally prefer pens. I like to write something down once and have it be permanent. Pencils just fade away too quickly.

Pencils fade, pens get lost and eventually stop working. I prefer a keyboard.

I wonder what the environmental impact is on the production of pens vs pencils? There are times when I prefer one to the other. I guess it just depends.
