It depends on your climate, of course, but I know people who have had success planting ornamental kale and cabbages in fall (the flowering, decorative kind).

I have found that starting an organic garden can be as easy as planting some of the product that you buy from the store(organic of course as a base). Just take for example garlic, we planted a clove and it has grown in our garden. Its cool and there are lots of others that you can do this with, I am in process of researching to see what works best.
