There was a time when reading a magazine was cool. Remember those days when we would save our lunch money in order to purchase a single issue of Car & Driver just in order to get
reviews of our dream car?

Nowadays, these reviews are just a few clicks (or swipes) away using our internet connected laptop or tablet. It is far more convenient and less costly. With the growing popularity of
internet-based search, does that mean that magazines and magazine subscriptions will be rendered obsolete?

It may be true that the demand for these printed media will decline, but surely not to the point of extinction. There will always be a market for magazines especially if one is to consider the following factors:

  1. Subscriptions make affordable gifts. This is especially so considering that many are available at discounted prices. And since you can pay using your credit card, it becomes easier on the pocket.
  2. Gifts of this sort can be useful to the recipient. You only need to know the person’s area of interest, and you are likely to find a magazine that will match this. Needless to say, the gift becomes somewhat personalized, hence meaningful.
  3. Those maintaining waiting rooms will definitely need magazines to keep their clients preoccupied. It becomes more important in lounges without other forms of entertainment. More often than not, piped-in music is not enough.
  4. Magazines are common fare in libraries, and these are likely to maintain their magazine subscriptions.
Magazines Yesterday and Today

The 1st magazine was published in the 18th century and it was general interest in nature. It caters to a wide range of readers, although superficially. Needless to say, it is not cost-effective from the point of view of a single reader since the materials that will likely cater to him are limited.

Nowadays, magazines deal more on specific topics. Hence, you will find one catering to outdoor photography, dirt bikes, or muscle cars. And if you are interested in any of these topics, you will surely read the publication from cover to cover. It is not surprising that even the advertisements are somehow related to the specialized subject. Although this somehow narrows down the target readership, it provides a more in depth treatment of the subject in question. Couple this with discount magazine subscription, and it becomes a cost-effective package.

In spite of this evolution, present-day magazines still do not have the ultimate accessibility and convenience of internet search. But unlike the majority of internet devices available, you can practically take it and enjoy it anywhere. It is not dependent on electricity and internet coverage. And when you are done with it you can store it in a box under your bed or recycle it to papier-mache.

Magazines may not be as fashionable as they were several decades ago, but these printed materials will still play a role in our everyday lives for a long time. This means that the likes of magazine subscriptions will continue to exist as well.
