The Toyota Prius has been the most popular hybrid available for years. The Prius has been considered one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles available worldwide. The number of units which had been selling each month supported this claim.
However, with recent recall issues and backlash regarding recalls, the Toyota company is now reducing the number of Toyota Prius hybrids they are producing. The company is expected to reduce production by at least ten percent. Previously the company had been averaging 50,000 Prius units per month. The expected reduction is to 45,000, although it may reduce further in the future.
Part of the problem is the recalls involving the Prius, which has dropped the status of Toyota further. The sales for the vehicle have reduced forty percent in the United States alone. The company has not said as to whether the current issues for the company will decrease further emphasis on hybrids. However, the popularity of other hybrid vehicles on the market is expected to rise with the dwindling support Toyota is receiving.
The Toyota Prius still remains popular in Japan, however, as has Toyota in general. Although, worldwide sales have been impacted and a spokesman for the company has indicated that Toyota is not certain about the future of the Prius.

That is a shame. I hope that this does not indicate a general decrease in popularity of hybrid vehicles. I think that once gasoline rises into the $4.00 range Toyota will see an increase in sales again.
