When one plans to extract 20 Gigawatts (or any other huge amount of energy) from an ecosystem, one should ask, what role was that energy playing before? In the case of a waterfall that is turned into a hydroelectric plant, that energy might have simply been eroding the soil hit by the water and therefore transforming it into a power house has negligible consequences on the surrounding ecosystem. But in the case of wind farms, are we 100% sure we are not changing wind patterns in an unsafe way?

Yes,Many Roles,We Like Water, and 93.74%

Hi betheev, We've read several impact reports concerning wind farms, and so far it seems that the birds are the most likely to suffer from the systems. We agree with you that hydro-electric technology has minimal impact on our eco-system, although advances in solar tech are makig it more eco-friendly these days. In our neighborhood locals don't seem to notice any abnormalities resulting from wind farms, hence our high percentage of certainty in that area. In the bigger picture, only time will tell.

Hey, thanks for your comment! Before posting my question, I read several reports on the different ways in which wind farms affect an eco-system, but couldn't find any that addressed my question.

It's O.K. to make several separate comments--sort of makes a dialogue forum!

I just hope we are not replacing one problem with another.
I doubt very small scale wind farms will have any significant impact on local climate. Probably just as much as a big billboard affects the flow of wind :)

There could be big consequences...

It's a very hard question to answer as you need to build out either large scale tests or apply weather models to the changes that come out of building a farm...

When you think about it, wind is just the movement of air particles from a colder to warmer zone (or vice versa) so there would definitely be changes in temperature in the local area... but how extensive I have no clue...

I found an article that relates to what you say. I guess time (and lots of research) will tell...
