In countires where there is ample sunlight...and no problem of winter snow fall etc.. I think solar power generation is a very good and efficient idea but when you are not sure about the intensity of the sun, there could be alternative energy sources needed...

Solar power is ample source on East Coast of United States. Lots of sun, little snow and usually pretty sunny. My friend got solared last year and saves a bundle on his bills. He even gets back money some months.
in norhteaster Ohio, then, we would need an alternate power supply. We tend to have quite a few months of bleak wintery weather and not nearly enough sunshine, lol.

Yes, Ohio would be tough. But they could do it. Just add some panels on the roof and around the home. You would be surprised how much sun those solar panels suck up. good luck.
i think that there is sufficient technology to harvest sun's energy in all conditions but bleakest of winters. the problem comes when you ask 'how is the excess going to be stored?' the problem is there because there ain't any good-nuff power cell technology to make it feasible for the rather bigger scales than you would call a "city block".
i would recommend to get some sort of power cell or accumulator for storing the excess energy collected. btw it will be hard to find a good one for cheap tho.
