I watched a show on the Discovery Channel about regional alternative energy projects. Each of these projects is run by a different private company, and usually there's one person at the top.

While we need the innovation, this could be a huge problem in the future.

I am reminded of that movie, "Total Recall" where the air generators were owned by a private company. If the residents didn't do as he said, the company's owner cut off the air.

Might we see the development of energy fiefdoms? Might we be reduced to nothing more than serfs in the future?

How should our government protect us against this possibility?

it is an interesting

thought. We would hope that these projects would be run by contractors paid by the government in order to prevent this scenario. Will our governments have the sense to do it this way?

oh dear....

Being reduced to "energy fiefdoms" seems extreme,

I would like to believe the competitive nature of capitalism would prevent such a scenario. Given that alternative energy is often best used in small, local establishments it can be hard to subsidize the endeavor by government agencies, but at the same time it is also just starting to gain serious ground. In the future I would like to believe local companies would develop a competitive business, providing energy users with options as well as lower rates.
