stavy asks:City Zoos

Do you think they still have a part to play? For a while at the start of the green movement, Zoos were villified for keeping animals in 'unnatural' surroundings and many declined and closed as funding dried up.

Zoos like London Zoo in Regents Park though, do vital and important conservation work and research, and is much respected throughout the world for it's work in protection of endangered species.

Should we be supporting them in their work?

Yes, and for good reason!

Although some zoos are nothing more than prisons for helpless creatures, most are truly humane, nurturing, and beneficial to endangered species. San Diego, Denver, Orlando, Saint Louis zoos are all good examples of man's desire to help Mother Nature recover from human interference.

On the fence

I am torn between my love of animals and my approval for those who help wild life. Mostly, I hate zoos because I don't think that we have a right to capture animals and put them on display like that.

Animal-Centered Philosophy

There are some zoos that really care about keeping the animals interested, vital, and happy. They do everything possible to give the animals the habitat they (or their parents) came from. Three stellar zoos that spring to mind are the Omaha Zoo, the LA Zoo, and the Portland OR Zoo.
