HereToday asks:Souvenirs or Spoilage?

When visiting a park, refuge, or some other beauty spot, do you pick flowers, take some rocks, etc, or do you leave them there for others to enjoy?

very sensible Chris!

Heretoday, it is a shame that your little area of wildlife and nature is so poorly protected. All our parks and open spaces have a designated authority directly funded by the government to protect them and preserve them for all of us.

We're Involved

In our local and regional State Parks and Forest Service "Upkeep and Improvement" committees, permitting us to clean up and construct different types of useful projects such as campgrounds and hiking trails. We are often amazed by the thoughtlessness and insensitivity of humans.

most parks

and reserves have rules against picking flowers and plants or removing things from the area.. i would think then that people would know to leave things as they found them for others to enjoy.

Summer pillaging...

In our particular beauty spot, everyday you can see people hauling driftwood away, presumably to put in their garden, picking the wildflowers, etc, without any regard to what they're doing. A shell or a pretty beach pebble is one thing, but this is ridiculous and harmful.

Are there

no park keepers or wardens protecting it? Seems a shame that selfish acts are allowed to spoil something that shoud be there for everyone to enjoy.

There are severe penalties over here for that sort of thing.

Unfortunately, not. It's said there's not enough money for personnel. People coming to clean the outhouses and people coming to get the admission money out of a box are the only daily personnel we see. There are also folks who don't pay the fee becau

I leave them

I don't visit many parks but, when I do I never take flowers, rocks, or anything else. I leave them for other people to enjoy. (Plus I don't want to get busted by the park rangers.)

We don't take any

I've been known to occasionally pick up some shells off a beach for a souvenir, but when it comes to parks, flowers are off limits and I don't take anything else I see either.
