Our local government has started a new movement today called the adopt a tree. What you have to do is give them a tree name and give donation for that tree...they will then buy the sapling, plant it at a particular location and take care of it...and also put your name against it....that way the plant can survive thanks to you....
I plant to adopt many but if you had the choice..what tree would it be?

what ever you do

adopt a tree that is as much possibly benign as to it's environment for example eucalyptus tend to secrete something into the soil that makes it impossible for other plants to grow nearby. (i am not saying eucalyptus is bad i am just saying it should not be grown by any artificial means)

that is a valuable suggestion keewi..thanks

My adopted trees...

If possible I would want a few fruit trees of different types; apple for the fall: peach, plum, and apricot for summer.
Then I would also adopt a few pine trees. They smell so good, look so pretty, grow so tall, and attract wildlife to live in their branches.

A Tree for my Mother

She dearly loved willow trees. I would have one planted in her honour.

being said what not to do

i would recommend Sequoiadendron species -also known as "giant tree".

and by the way

do not ever attempt to grow any tree in a foreign soil other than the tree's natural habitat. so that Sequoiadendron option is available as a recommendation if you have naturally propagating tree poupulation of the same genus nearby where you decide to adopt a tree.

so my conclusive recommendation for adopting a tree would be choosing a specie that is as much benign to its' environment as possible.

Boy, until I read the other comments...

I had NO idea what kind of a tree I'd adopt. (I don't know much about trees.) But, like HereToday, I ADORE willow trees. I love pine trees too, though, so I would probably adopt at least those two.
Comments:
And if one takes some time to read Keewi's answers, we'd better be very careful! She seems right on.
keewi is a "he".
and as a reminder i would like to say that willow is quiet omnipresent around the world... but! take into account that none of us here knows a willow tree better than a willow tree so estimates done by any of us here can be misleading...
thus whatever tree one may choose it must "essentially" be a tree that is "native" to it's "upbringing soil habitat"!
and btw same goes for pine.
