from what i hear and understand this is bound to happen, one day someone will take a compass and will find north pole needle pointing to the place where south pole is today... unfortunately there are bound to be specific eras while this south-north exchange takes place, in which the magnetosphere of the earth will be considerably weaker than it is today and that meaning along with the human aided corrosion of the earth, this planet will really be a life threating place. how do you think humanity will take this catastrophy when it befalls upon us?

It is a very slow process

As far as I know the process of shifting of the poles as you call it is still going on...and the oceans, continents are all moving of shifting.. The proces is very slow therefore we cannot understand the significcance before a few hundred years minimum...so I think humans will not really see it as a sudden catastrophe happening.

Atula is Spot on

Regarding the natural evolution of Earth and Her magnetic poles and shifting continents. We also agree that Humans will "take what's coming to them" and learn to deal with it as things unfold.
Comments:
things will unfold and the slow pace of the process is what makes it especially dangerous... it is not the poles that i fear but the occurings that happen to be bringing on the magnetosphere weakening...
and such slices of time which could last for decades due to the slowness of the process would mean solar radiation levels soaring up. earth has witnessed mass extinctions before and the next one could be looming just around the corner.
Or maybe not. Pessimism and paranoia sell a lot of books, but we think humans are very adaptable and ingenious. Bring on a problem-voila-we solve it and move forward. So far in history it has worked every time.
i am not "eessentially" trying to promote any paranoia... i am "officially" and most consciously preaching these words to raise awareness and i most certainly can see the potential of human ingenuity as much as i trust in it too.

By the time it happens

Man will have evolved far beyond the need to worry about it.. We'll be on a dozen other planets by then. Man as a species is highly adaptable to many extremes and we will manage to survive this and other setbacks.

We will survive...

because that's human nature. But it will not be easy. We are so spoiled by modern conveniences that having to "rough it" will be pure hell.
