After storms a lot of wood washes up on the beach and I wonder if it hurts anything to snag some pieces to bring home and toss into the fireplace?

Well with a bit of caution
I don't see a problem. Of course as long as it's not a piece of painted or treated wood. I can't see that it hurts anything.

I don't see any problem
I think it is better to clear up the beaches of all the drifted wood so rather than being a problem it is cleaning up for good I would say.
