People pay the most attention to changes that directly affect them.
To get their attention on environmental issues, the first event should be public discussion on HOW to move people away from coastlines, due either to rising ocean levels, or the problems managing the waste created by beach communities

Take a Deep Breath
If you are trying to deal with the psychological effect, just take a few deep breaths and move on. If you are trying to get them interested, use valid science and not something that they can poke holes into.
